Battery energy storage system
AFNORD Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Overview
The AFNORD Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is engineered to efficiently store and deliver energy to optimize power distribution across varying demands. By storing energy during periods of high generation and low demand, the BESS ensures reliable power supply during times of high demand and low production. The advanced system integrates seamlessly with EMS, BMS, and SCADA for precise monitoring, protection, and control.
Core Components of AFNORD’s BESS
Battery Cells
The foundation of the AFNORD BESS lies in its high-quality battery cells, which store and release energy through chemical reactions that convert chemical energy to electrical energy. Each cell contains a positive electrode (cathode), negative electrode (anode), separator, and electrolyte, forming the building blocks of the entire energy storage system.
Battery Module
Multiple battery cells are combined to form a module, increasing storage capacity and voltage. Each module includes an advanced Battery Management System (BMS) that monitors cell voltage, temperature, and current, ensuring safety through overcharge, over-discharge, and temperature regulation. The BMS also facilitates data communication, allowing real-time system adjustments.
Battery Pack
The battery pack, a higher-level component, is created by connecting multiple battery modules. This integrated unit consists of battery modules, a BMS, thermal management system, and electrical interfaces within a protective enclosure, forming the robust storage backbone of the AFNORD BESS.
Power Distribution Unit (PDU)
The PDU efficiently distributes power to different system components, acting as an essential interface for energy flow within the BESS. This device includes protective mechanisms to ensure stable power distribution across the system’s operations.
Power Conversion System (PCS)
A critical interface between the battery system and the power grid, the PCS converts stored energy from Direct Current (DC) to Alternating Current (AC) for compatibility with most electrical loads. This conversion supports smooth integration with grid requirements and optimizes the energy flow between the BESS and external systems.
Static Transfer Switch (STS)
For uninterrupted power supply, the STS enables rapid switching between two AC power sources, with a transfer time of less than a single cycle. This fast response capability is essential for high-priority applications where continuity is critical.
Intelligent Management Systems
Battery Management System (BMS)
The BMS constantly monitors battery health by tracking output, voltage, temperature, state of charge (SOC), and safety warnings. By regulating charging and discharging rates, it maintains optimal battery performance and longevity.
Energy Management System (EMS)
The EMS plays a pivotal role in BESS operation by monitoring grid demand and coordinating energy transfer. Based on system logic, it sends charge/discharge signals to maintain energy balance, managing both grid requirements and battery state.
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA)
The SCADA system is the operational control center, providing real-time monitoring and control over the entire energy storage system. It communicates directly with the BMS and other components like inverters and meters, enabling operators to oversee system health, performance metrics, and any alarms or alerts. Key data readings—such as SOC, current, voltage, and temperature—are continuously monitored, ensuring that AFNORD’s BESS operates efficiently and reliably.
